Lesson & Unit Plans:
- Grade 1: Math Unit Plan (Measurement)
This measurement unit has not yet been taught, as it will be used during my second practicum. It is designed to build foundational understanding through hands-on, exploratory learning aligned with the BC Math curriculum. Students will sort, compare, and measure using direct comparison and non-standard units to develop concepts of size, length, and consistency while building mathematical vocabulary. The focus is on conceptual understanding in real-world contexts, preparing students for more advanced measurement learning in Grade 2.

This lesson integrates mathematics and Indigenous art to help students understand the concept of line symmetry through a meaningful, culturally respectful context. By exploring symmetrical patterns in Indigenous designs, students connect mathematical reasoning to visual and cultural expression. The lesson promotes creativity, critical thinking, and appreciation of Indigenous knowledge systems. I stress the importance before doing a lesson like this, of ensuring that if you were to use any specific artwork from an Indigenous artist or community, you reach out for permission before using any of the pieces of work for tracing. As well as giving credit to any community or artist’s work. It supports the BC Curriculum’s goal of developing numeracy, cultural awareness, and cross-curricular learning through inquiry and hands-on exploration.

This lesson focused on helping students develop comprehension and critical thinking by identifying themes and creating theme statements using Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts. Taught during my practicum at Aberdeen Elementary, the lesson was successful, with students strongly connecting to the “wants vs. needs” concept and relating it to their own experiences. Supporting materials, including the lesson, slides, and student work, are included in the links.
